Humane Law Enforcement Officer
Position Overview:
The Humane Law Enforcement Officer patrols the city and county, enforces animal ordinances, responds to calls for injured, trapped, vicious or stray animals, interfaces with the public to solve animal problems, and educate regarding ordinances. Must be 21 years of age, have a high school diploma, submit to a background check, and be eligible for Kentucky State Euthanasia Specialist Certification. Must maintain strict confidentiality. Requires a strong commitment to the mission and purpose of JCACC.
Key Responsibilities:
- Enforce ordinances
- Respond in a timely and pro-active manner to calls for injured, trapped, vicious, or stray animals
- Promotes responsible pet ownership through education
Makes decisions regarding euthanasia in compliance with SOP - Performs euthanasia as necessary in accordance with all laws and regulations
- Humanely and respectfully disposes of euthanized animals
Administrative:
- Paperwork and record-keeping
- Citation Logs
- Documentation of cases and the handling of each
- Dispatch and phone answering
- Excellent internal and external customer service skills
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Strong organizational skills with an attention to detail
- JCACC SOPs
- Current laws and ordinances
- Word, Excel, and other applicable software
Animal Control Enforcement:
- Enforce Jessamine County, Nicholasville, & Wilmore leash laws
- Pick up sick or injured animals, stays or transports them in a humane and safe manner
- Preliminary investigations for cruelty cases
- Appear in District Court as needed
- Process incoming animals
- Customer service function – interface with the public regarding animal issues
- Issues courtesy warnings or citations
- Present cases before the courts on animal issues
- Answer calls pertaining to animal control
- Notify owners of impounded animals
General:
- Contribute to the monitoring of the needs of Jessamine County animals for potential needs
- Frequently interaction with other departments
- Perform other duties as requested
- Be a positive representative of Jessamine County Animal Care and Control and the county
Qualifications:
- Committed to Jessamine County Animal Care and Control and its values; an understanding of our objectives; organization, services, and the responsibilities and relationships of paid and volunteer staff
- Strong communication skills, including a diplomatic presentation and the strength of will to handle difficult situations
- Works in a team environment
- Self-motivates and works independently in a timely fashion

- Assess animal sex, age, and breed type
- Lifts animals, sometimes weighing in excess of 85lbs
- Handles vicious, sick, and dangerous animals
- Handles constant mental pressure of life and death decision-making
- Maintains flexibility and assists with what is needed for the betterment of the organization
Time Commitment: Full Time
Supervises: None
Reports To: Chief of Humane Law Enforcement Officers
This position requires the lifting and handling of multiple animals sometimes in excess of 85lbs.
