Type of Phone Calls

All calls for Animal Control you should get exact address for the incident. You should also get a name and phone number in case the officer has trouble finding it. You should also get a description of the animal, including color and breed.

Adoptions
Animals available for adoption can be viewed at the shelter during normal business hours. There is a fee of $120 for adult dogs, $150 for puppies and Blackburn trained dogs. All felines are $40. All adoptions include spay or neuter, rabies shot, microchip, all pertinent vaccines, and de-wormer.
Animal Bites
The caller should be asked if they need an ambulance. If so, they should be instructed to call 911 once you are done getting information for the officer. You should get the following information from the caller; (make sure the animal actual broke skin) their name, telephone number, name of the victim (if different from the caller), address of the incident, type of animal, breed, color, address of the location for the animal. Then an Animal Control Officer should be dispatched immediately.
Barking Dog Calls

Jessamine County Animal Control (JCAC) does not handle barking dog complaints. This falls under the noise ordinances, which must be enforced by the law enforcement agency that has jurisdiction. You can advise them to call 859-887-5447.

Cats

JCAC does not pick up cats unless they are sick, injured or they have bitten someone (which a trap might have to be set for that cat). Jessamine County, Nicholasville, and Wilmore do not have ordinances that restrict cats from running loose. There is a private nonprofit organization that will set traps on the owner’s property and trap, spay or neuter and release the cats back on the same property. Their phone number is 859-983-9016

Deceased Animals

People who have animals that have died are responsible for their disposal. They can either bury the animal, they can put it in a trash bag and contact a veterinarian who will dispose of the animal for a fee or place the animal their herbie. If someone calls about a deceased animal on a roadway, they should be directed to the State Road Department, County Road Department, or City Streets, depending on the jurisdiction. If an animal that does not belong to the property owner has died on their property an Animal Control Officer should be dispatched to remove the animal and check for a microchip. Dogs Running Loose

You should attempt to get the following information from the caller: breed of dog(s), color, best address of where the dog(s) is running around, possible address of the owner or harborer and the caller’s name and telephone for a callback from an Animal Control Officer if required. (Calls are confidential) Then an Animal Control Officer should be dispatched as soon as possible.

Dogs Using Bathroom in Neighbors Yard

 JCAC does not handle these calls. The City of Nicholasville is the only Government entity that has an ordinance for this. The caller should be instructed to contact Nicholasville Code Enforcement for nuisance

Donations

People that would like to donate money can do so by check, money order or credit card. All check donations can be made payable to the Jessamine County Fiscal Court. Checks or money orders can be mailed to Jessamine County Animal Care and Control at 120 Fairgrounds Way, Nicholasville, KY 40356. Additionally, callers can be directed to our website for credit card donations only.

Door Notices

If someone calls about a door notice that was left on their door. You should find out what officer left the door notice (located at the bottom of the door notice) and get the caller’s name and phone number for the officer to return their call or transfer them to the officers/ or ACO phone voicemail.

Found Animals

Anyone calling to report that they have found an animal, should either give their address so an Animal Control Officer can pick up the animal or bring the animal to the shelter during normal business hours. However, if they want to keep the animal until the owner has been found they can do so. A photo of the animal should be sent to the shelter and a found report should be created.

Humane Treatment of Animals

You should attempt to get the following information from the caller: humane treatment issue, how long has the issue been going on, type of animal(s), breeds, colors, address of the violation and the caller’s name and telephone for callback from an Animal Control Officer if required. (Calls are confidential) Then an Animal Control Officer should be dispatched immediately.

Injured Animals

You should attempt to get the following information from the caller: type of animal(s), breeds, colors, best address of where the animal(s) are located and the caller’s name and telephone for a callback from an Animal Control Officer if required. (Calls are confidential) Then an Animal Control Officer should be dispatched immediately.

Loose Livestock

You should attempt to get the following information from the caller: type of animal(s), breeds, colors, best address of where the animal(s) are located and the caller’s name and telephone for a callback from an Animal Control Officer if required. (Calls are confidential) Then an Animal Control Officer should be dispatched immediately.

Lost Animals

Anyone calling that has lost an animal should be instructed to come to the animal shelter during normal business hours to look for themselves and to fill out a lost animal report (bring photo if possible), check our Facebook “mug shots” or fill out a lost report on our website.

Owner Surrenders

JCAC can pick up owner surrenders, however this should be the LAST OPTION!! The owners must transport the animal(s) to the shelter during normal business hours and sign the appropriate paperwork. If they cannot transport and an Animal Control Officer must pick up the animal(s). There are fees associated with this type of call. $35 to pick-up, up to (2) owner surrenders any additional is $10 for every additional (2). $50 for owner surrender pick-up euthanasia requested.

Return to Owner

Owners calling to reclaim a stray animal, should be instructed to come to the shelter during normal business hours. The fee to reclaim an animal is $60 plus, $6 per day boarding, $5 rabies (if unable to provide proof of rabies shot), $15 microchip and animal license ($10 altered or $20 unaltered, if not current).

Traps

JCAC is extremely limited on the number of traps that can be loaned out. Please consult a supervisor for approval. If yes, the caller should be directed to come to shelter and pick up the trap. Additionally, a security deposit (check only) to rent the trap shall be collected and placed in the safe. If the trap is not returned, then the check shall be deposited, and new trap will be purchased. If no, then you can direct the caller to contact Tractor Supply who sells live traps.

Vicious Animals

You should attempt to get the following information from the caller: type of animal(s), breeds, colors, best address of where the animal(s) are located and the caller’s name and telephone for a callback from an Animal Control Officer if required. (Calls are confidential) Then an Animal Control Officer should be dispatched immediately.

Wildlife

JCAC does not pick up wildlife unless they are sick, injured, bitten someone, or confined inside a home (not the attic or crawl space) creating a nuisance. Which you should attempt to get the following information from the caller: type of animal(s), where the animal(s) are located and the caller’s name and telephone for a callback from an Animal Control Officers if required. Then an Animal Control Officer should be dispatched immediately.
