Volunteering with

Jessamine County Animal Care and Control

Thank you for your interest in the Jessamine County Animal Care & Control Volunteering Program. Being a volunteer is extremely rewarding, educational, and fun. You can have a significant positive impact on the lives of homeless animals.

There are a few key things to know about volunteering at the shelter, so please familiarize yourself with the basics below.

Age.
The minimum age to volunteer at the JCACC is 12. If you are under 16, you must have a parent accompany you.
Hours.
There is no hour minimum for volunteering. You may come any day at any time that the shelter is open to the public for however long you decide. However, volunteer staff are expected to attend at least once a month to keep up to date with the Volunteer Coordinator on any events or rules that may have changed.
Signing In & Out.
Signing in and out with your name and time is how we keep track of the attendance of volunteers. Please visit the Volunteer Clipboard by the Surrender/Intake door to sign in and out.
Contact Information.

You and your emergency contact’s information must be kept up to date at all times. You are responsible for notifying the Volunteer Coordinator of any changes in address or phone number.

Respectful Behavior.
When volunteering at the shelter, you are a representative of JCACC and its image. You are expected to conduct yourself in a professional, respectful, and courteous manner.
Non-JCACC Pets/Guests.

It is not appropriate to bring children, friends, personal pets, or family who are not registered JCACC volunteers to the facility while you are performing volunteer activities.

Privacy Policy.

Volunteers are not to disclose any confidential information (contact, personal information, financial, etc.) of shelter customers or staff members.

Dress Code.

Come prepared with the mindset that anything you wear may get dirty. You are advised to cover as much skin as possible to avoid scratches and limit exposure to zoonotic communicable illnesses, such as ringworm, mange (scabies), fleas and/or ticks. You are required to wear the following during each volunteer activity for the JCACC:

  • JCACC Volunteer ID Badge. These are located by the volunteer sign-in sheet. You may ask the Volunteer Coordinator to create a nametag with your name on it.
  • Long pants. No shorts, skirts, or other garments that expose portions of the leg to potential scratches or scrapes.
  • Comfortable, closed-toe shoes. No sandals or flip-flops.
  • Comfortable Shirt. No offensive wordings, symbols, or pictures allowed.
Drugs and Alcohol.

Under no circumstances shall a volunteer work at our facility under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

Cell Phones.

Cell phone use while handling an animal is strictly prohibited, and volunteers may not use their cell phones while interacting with JCACC customers.

Animal Care.

It is expected that JCACC volunteers will treat all aimals in the shelter’s care with compassion and gentleness.

Injuries.

You are responsible for your own health and welfare. If you are injured while at JCACC, you must notify a staff member immediately.

Complaints.

If you have a complaint regarding volunteering, shelter activities, or a staff member, your point of contact is the Volunteer Coordinator. The Volunteer Coordinator will work with you to resolve the complaint.

Volunteer Term.

Both you and JCACC are free at any time, with or without notice or cause, to end the volunteer relationship. Dismissed volunteers are not permitted entry to JCACC beyond the public interactions.

Media Relations.

Volunteers are strictly prohibited from speaking on behalf of JCACC to any representative of the media.

Euthanasia.

As a volunteer for JCACC, you may be exposed to animals facing euthanasia, even though you will never have to witness it. JCACC uses a humane sodium pentobarbital solution injected intravenously. Whether or not you personally agree with the practice, this is a reality at the shelter. If you are not comfortable in this atmosphere, this may not be a positive volunteer experience for you.

Disease Control.

JCACC is responsible for ensuring public safety including control of zoonotic disease containment. As a volunteer at JCACC, you must be sure to wash your hands frequently, as well as clean all animal handling equipment that you may use (washtub after bathing, clean brushes after use, etc.).

Inmate Work Program.

JCACC participates in the Inmate Work Program, allowing Class-D inmates to come and work at our shelter. If this is not something you are not comfortable with, this may not be a volunteer opportunity for you.

I, the undersigned, in exchange for my being permitted to work as a Jessamine County Animal Shelter volunteer, hereby agree to release Jessamine County Fiscal Court and hold it harmless for any and all liability for an injury or damage I may receive while acting in the capacity of an Animal Shelter Volunteer. I do so whether I am at the shelter or at an off-site location. I further acknowledge that as a volunteer, I may not be eligible for Workers Compensation and agree to hold Jessamine County Fiscal Court harmless for same.
I certify that the above information is correct and complete to the best of my knowledge and belief. I understand that misrepresentation, falsification or omission of material may be cause for rejection of my application or separation after selection into the volunteer program. I understand and agree that statements made in this application may be subject to verification concerning same, and I hereby release any such person from any and all liability for any damage whatsoever incurred in furnishing such information. Futhermore, I authorize the Jessamine County Fiscal Court to make all necessary and appropriate investigations or background checks to verify the information contained herein.
